The Importance of Capturing Life Through The Lens

Dancing Poet Creative Media is launching a FREE Instagram course on April 1st.  Be sure to sign up for their newsletter to get it.

I'm so happy to be part of Dancing Poet Creative Media's Blog Hop Today!

Without further ado, here's author Devin Berglund
to tell you about the importance of capturing life through the lens!

Don't you just love that we have the opportunity to capture life and memories through pictures? Do you ever look back at your childhood photos? Or even at your parent's childhood pictures? I sure know I do. I love looking through them. One time I was sitting in my parent's family library where a ton of our books are. There was this little wooden photo chest. I cracked it open to find dozens of pictures. They were black and white, sepia, and some were colored. Some were of my parents when they were younger, of me and my siblings, or even brittle photographs of my grandparents and great-grandparents.

This is a picture of my dad's mother, Doris, with her siblings. She is on the far left. Check out the cool old cars!

Photos are just as important today as they were back then, except I think they were kept in a physical copy back then more than they are today. But who doesn't love physical copies of photographs? I think we need to be printing our photos more so that we have a storehouse of memories that isn't stored on technology.

4 Reasons You Should Capture Life Through The Lens

1. Memories

In the dead of winter our white German Shepherd had a litter of puppies... guess what color all of them were? The only white they inherited from her was the white on the tips of their tails.

2. Sense of time & place

There are many things that will give you a sense of time and place. Here are some things to think about when you are taking photos. You want your kids to know what things were like when they were growing up, but a photographer barely considers looking for these kinds of things. The things that might be different in 20 years.

Clothing -

You'll be able to get a feeling of time by the clothing.
These are my mom's parents. Classy clothing, right?

Haha... I always love this photo. The rolled up jeans and the white shirts.

Place -

These are the woods and river near my home in Minnesota. So beautiful, right?

3. The small things

Like an excited child and the use of his or her imagination.

Nothing better than catching a child's imagination on camera. My dad was definitely up to something here.

You probably understand what I mean about capturing all the small things.
It's tough to describe it all in words when you have the images at your fingertips.

And hey, a picture is worth a thousand words.

4. Traveling

In December, I went to South Africa. Totally loved it. Definitely recommend you go there someday! I find it super important to take pictures everywhere, while traveling.

Instagram is an amazing way to inspire yourself to take more pictures for your sake, your kid's sakes, and also for fun.

Capture it all. You will always enjoy looking back at them.

You'll be grateful you did take them!

Challenge:

  1. Pick at least 10-20 pictures a month.
  2. Edit them.
  3. Have them printed.
  4. Start your own photo chest.

How Do I Make Time For Fitness?

Easy!

I squish it into my schedule
in fun and fabulous ways!

I even sneak it into
our weekly Family Fun Night.

Fitness? Ain't nobody got time for that!

Actually, you do. Like writing, you won't magically "find" the time for it, but you can make the time for it.

The secret: You have to want it

Confession: It's not easy to make the time for something you don't always know you "want". With an overbooked life it can be especially challenging. You have to make the time, but you also have to find the motivation to want to. Finding my motivation was the toughest part.

Here's how I handled it:

1. I got real with myself and my excuses.

  • Excuse #1: I'm too tired.

    Truth:
I'm too busy expending my energies in all the wrong places.

    Solution:
I took note of how I was spending my time and energy and killed anything that was sucking my life away without any reward or purpose. That hour I was on Pinterest pinning the best "fitness" quotes? Gone. The thirty minutes I wasted on Facebook whining about my lack of energy? A thing of the past. Bam- right there is an extra hour and a half for fitness!

  • Excuse #2:  I'd rather spend time with my family/friends.

    Truth:
I can actually spend time with my family that doesn't require me to be in a vegetative state of perpetual couch potato. In fact, it benefits all of us if I require something more than drooling over a bowl of popcorn while we watch Netflix.

Solution: Think outside the "dinner and a movie" night. We're getting into a rut of dinner and a movie which also means a rut of sitting on our butts. From now on we're going to include more "moving and shaking" into our family fun nights. I'll give you some fun ideas in step 3.

  • Excuse #3: It's too hot, too cold, too wet etc.

    Truth:
PFFT! Since when does fitness have to happen outside in perfect weather?

    Solution:
Inside activity options exist and keep you from getting "burn out" that comes with doing the same ol' workout every single day.

2. I got the right tools to kill my excuses.

  • Fitbit One: The Fitbit One is my best workout buddy. It motivates me to keep on keeping on until I hit my daily total of steps. As you can imagine getting this many steps when my day consists of a whole lot of sitting on my butt isn't easy.

Which is why I love the following tools:

    • Stamina In Motion Elliptical Trainer: This bad boy sits under my desk while I write or do college assignments. I'm on my butt but I'm peddling like Richard Simmons is behind me on a glittery tricycle! When I'm done with my "sit on butt" work I simply move this to the living room and put it where I can see it. During television show/movie watching I use it as a balance-elliptical. I'm watching TV, but I'm no couch potato!

    • Leslie Sansone Walk At Home DVDs: These DVDs are an anti-social hermit's dream come true, but they'll work for anyone. There's a great variety of workouts to choose from and I prefer these 100% to a boring ol' treadmill. I love my outside nature walks but I still use these everyday because it means I can walk in the rain, snow, or at midnight if I want to-- from the climate controlled safety of my living room. Leslie is energetic and fun without being over the top or creepy!

      • You'll also need a great pair of athletic shoes designed for your foot and your favored workout. I highly recommend going to a shoe store that specializes in fitness footwear. Thrifty secret? If you find the "perfect" pair of shoes in a store, come home and check online for the same brand/style at a discounted price. I found my faves (Asics) at Foot Locker... for $165.00. Got them in a discontinued color at Amazon for $36.95. I'm fit but I'm cheap.

3. I got the right attitude about the "work" in the workout.

  • Where there's a will, there's a way.

  • I might not be willing to "work out" but I'm always willing to have fun!

  • If you put some play into the workout it's suddenly more fun than work.

  • There's no rule that says adults can't play and have fun.

  • Walk in place, hop on a stationary bike, or jump rope while you watch movies or catch up on your favorite television shows.

  • Play hide and seek with your kids, spouse, or friends. Too kiddie for the grown ups? Try Extreme Hide And Seek. Everyone hiding gets a grenade (water balloon), the Seeker gets a water gun. Get the idea? A Nerf Gun war is also fun.

  • Get outside and hike, skate, swim, play on the swing set, jump on the trampoline, ride a bike.

  • Raining? Too cold/hot? Play indoors. Games like hide and seek are still fun inside too! Try "bomb squad" - Set an egg timer for 7 minutes, hide it well, turn your friends/family lose to find it and shut it off before it 'blows'. (This works best with an egg timer that ticks loudly.)

  • Pop in a favorite movie and play "Every Time" - Every time someone casts a spell in Harry Potter do ten jumping jacks- see who is the fastest. Every time a commercial comes on during the Walking Dead run in place. You get the idea.

  • Dance like no one's watching. Yell out "Random Dancing" at the weirdest possible moments-- the rule is everyone (including you) has to dance for 30 seconds when you do. Even more fun? Give your kids the power to call for a random dance. They are so much better at spontaneity, you know?

Does all this crazy "fun" stuff work?

Yes! Well, itt has for me at least. I thought I'd toss it out there and see if anything tickles your fancy. Be sure to check with your doctor before trying out any new diet/exercise type of things though. After all, I'm the only one of my kind and all.

Our Family Night Fun Friday Agenda:

Wreck It Ralph and a game of "Every Time" followed by Checker-Wrecker- it's our little twist on checkers. If you've seen the Pixar short "Geri's Game" it is kind of like that.

Social Media And You - The Twitter: What The Tweet?

Once upon a time there was just writing, but now there is "platform building and networking" and all that "business". What The Tweet? Once upon a time, you wrote a book, you got an agent, you got published, and you did a few hours at a book store signing copies of your books.
You're a writer. The end.

Not anymore. Now, writers are supposed to have a platform, a following, and be marketable long before their books ever see the light of day. Some say it's important to have a "Social Media Presence" even before your final draft is finished!

"Many agents and publishers won’t look at you, if you don’t have a big enough platform (Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, and more) followers." -- Devin Berglund

I don't know about you, but I like to write. I do not like to do the "business". Social Media is time consuming. It's frustrating. It's confusing. I'd much rather be writing than trying to promote my writing-- which I have less time to do because I'm busy trying to learn The Twitter.

PROBLEM: You need the social media.

SOLUTION: Use the force.

Okay, maybe that's better left to the Jedi Masters, but it just so happens that I know some Jedi Masters. They have so much wisdom that we cannot cover it all here today, so let's just focus on the Social Media Thingy that gives me the most "WTH?" moments.

I call it "THE TWITTER".

Once upon a time there was just writing, but now there is "platform building and networking" and all that "business". What The Tweet? Dun Dun Dun...

Social Media Jedi Devin Berglund of Life & Writing Wanderlust loves Twitter! She loves it so much she's started a monthly #WritingHarvest Twitter Chat! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I want to talk about this post:

HOW TO USE TWITTER!

Tweet Tweet!
Because, if I'm being honest (and I am) I don't get The Twitter. I try to get it. I even toss up some tweets daily. Am I doing it right? Doubtful. I headed over to Devin's to see what I am doing wrong and how to do it right. She's got some AMAZING TWITTER TIPS, but more than that she has step-by-step instructions from beginning to end on how to do The Twitter. She also covers Twitter Etiquette! I really should have started with Devin's how-to before I got all giddy and started Buffering things to tweet about. Yikes.

Once you know how to use The Twitter, you're ready to visit Jedi Master Natalie J. Pierson over at Read Write Muse. Natalie's going to show you:

HOW TO ROCK YOUR TWITTER!

I'm not going to lie. I printed this one out. I'm in the process of trying to memorize it. Not only will I learn The Twitter. I will ROCK The Twitter.  When you finish reading this one be sure to check out her other posts about Twitter. Another favorite:

Look at all those monies!

If I had a dollar for every time

I was asked this question

I'd be rich enough to retire today.

Here's My Secret...

I Don't.

Being a stay-at-home, work-at-home, homeschooling, college attending, wife, mom, and writer is no piece of cake. Each "job" has its own unique set of challenges. Tackling one at a time is enough to keep any average 40-something woman on her toes. Tackling them all at once? I admit it's crazy. It's also doable because I learned 2 specific rules for "Doing All The Things!" that has never failed me.

Two Rules & My Secret Strategies:

Rule # 1 You Cannot Do ALL The Things!

  • Prioritize Your Life!

    1.  Take out three sheets of paper.

    2.  Title one page: Ongoing
         Title the second: Alternate
         Title the third: Doable

    3. On your Ongoing page make a list of the reoccurring tasks you have to get done in order of importance. (Think "have to" and not "want to".) For example, you "have to" go to work. Take a close look at each item. Can you delegate it to someone else? Could your spouse take on the laundry or washing dishes in order to allow you to complete more of your "have to" items? If you can delegate put a name next to the task and move it to the bottom of your list.

    4. On your Alternate page and list your "want to" and "need to" tasks in order of importance. These are tasks that typically have a begin and end date. For example, you "want to" reorganize your kitchen and you "need to" start on that novel idea you thought of a year ago.

    5. Take your top 5 "have to" items and your top 3 "want to/need to" items and put them on your Doable page. These are now your priorities. Consider them closely. Think of how much time you'll need for each task. Mark off anything that is suddenly not as important, or rearrange the items a bit if you feel it necessary.

This is what my list looks like!

    Secret Strategy # 1

Be honest in your "importance" scale. You'll notice family is 4th on my list. Awful right? Not really- consider that my family and I are unique in that we are all home together all the time. I delegated much of the homeschooling responsibility and housework to my hubby who is currently between jobs. Family time for me means a spot in our week where we all drop everything to spend time together. It's important to be "all there" so it is a priority. Is it top on my list? No, because we are together all day every day.

Rule # 2 You Cannot FIND Time!

  •  You Make Time!

    1. Track your hours. How are you spending them? How are you really spending them?
You might be surprised to find that the "I'll just take a peek at Facebook or Pinterest" is eating away three or more hours of your time. It's amazing (and scary) how time flitters away while we play online. Time is something you cannot get back. Spend it wisely. If you track your hours and find that a lot of it is spent on what I call "leeches" (like social media, procrastination, piddling) you're going to have to get tough with yourself. If today was your last day would you care that you didn't get to read everyone's Facebook status? I didn't think so.

You cannot find time, but you can capture it!

    Secret Strategy #2

If you missed my post about Heat-Mapping, now is the time to check it out. This is by far the best trick I've found for making the most of the hours you're given. It helps you track where you spend your time, but more than that it helps you see what hours you are most apt to be productive so that you can create your own custom "hot zone" schedule! Works like a charm!
