Fearless Friday: 5 Steps To Freedom

Are you ready to take action?

Fear.

You can't avoid it.
Let's face it.

You can't run from it.
Let's fight it.

You can't let it imprison you.
Let's be free.

“Only by fully experiencing fear,
can you ever hope to control it.”

― Wayne Gerard Trotman, Kaya Abaniah and the Father of the Forest

TAKE ACTION.

The Fearless Friday
Five Step Program To Freedom:

Step #1: Identify It.

What are you afraid of?

Dig deep. It's not just the surface thing that is crippling you-- it's what lies beneath.

“There is no illusion greater than fear.”
― Lao Tzu

For example, I'm "afraid of flying". What does that mean? Am I afraid of airplanes? No. Am I afraid of birds? No. Am I afraid Peter Pan is going to show up and fly me out the window? No. I'm not afraid of "flying". I'm afraid of not being in control. I'm afraid of what could go wrong, leaving me a sitting duck for an inevitable fiery end that I have no control over. Now, I'm getting somewhere. My fear isn't just about flying, it's about control.

Step #2: Face It.

How can you confront it?

Get real. You control your fear, it doesn't control you. Greet fear with a brave smile and let it know you're the boss.

“I have to face the fear.
I have to take control of the situation
and find a way to make it less frightening.”

― Veronica Roth, Divergent

(In my case, it's ironic, yes? In order to face my fear of not being in control I have to take control.) Avoid avoiding it. Put yourself in the path of your fear. This is the ol' "If you get thrown from the horse you get right back on" theory in action. Now, I can't just go out and hop on a plane (too expensive), but I can put myself into other situations where I'm not in control. Baby steps are fine. They still get you where you're going. Just move forward-- towards your fear. The idea here is you're chasing it, not running from it.

Step #3: Train For It.

How do I prepare for battle?

Get ready. You can't go in unprepared. What kind of fighter goes into the ring without training?

 “When you encounter uncomfortable situations,
you can either decide to be victim or an over-comer.
Always choose to be an over-comer.
Grace is within our reach to be an over-comer.”

― Lailah Gifty Akita

Step 2 was the beginning of your training. You have to face your opponent before you can fight them. Now, it's time to finish your training. Breathe. Pray. Meditate. Sing "Mary Had A Little Lamb". Whatever it takes to CALM yourself. You can't go into the battle already half-out of your mind with fear. Find your technique for calming and centering yourself. I use breathing exercises and a mantra (I'm bigger than my fears). You can now stand bravely and calmly before your enemy.

Step #4: Fight It.

How can you conquer it?

Start swinging. Give your fear your best "game face" and start swinging!

To escape fear, you have to go through it, not around.
 ― Richie Norton

You might not win every round, but don't stop throwing punches. Chase your fears around the ring. Corner them. Pummel them until the throw in the towel. How? You have to decide what works for you, but what works for me is writing. I write down all the things that make me feel "out of control". Then I write myself into the story as the heroic winner of the disaster at hand. Other times, I repeat: "Not the Apocalypse". This is code to myself for "it's not that big of a deal". It doesn't matter that hubby loaded the dishwasher "wrong". It matters that I don't have to do the dishes now.  (Yes, I have a problem with rearranging dirty dishes. I admit it. It's a work in progress.)

Step #5: Freedom!

How can you conquer it?

Walk away. You've TKO'd you fear. Now what? Walk away, hands in the air all Balboa style and yell, "YO ADRIAN!" or whatever makes you feel like the winner you are. You've won this fight.

“Closing the gate on her oldest fears
as she had closed the gate of her own fenced yard,
she discovered the wings she'd always wished she had.”

― Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

Of course, fear might demand a rematch. That's okay. Each and every time you fight your fear and win you are that much closer to total freedom. Am I ready to hop a plane yet? Not quite, but I'm getting there. I have accepted flying is something I will likely have to do at some point. I've come to terms with it. I might have a panic attack when they start loading the plane, but I think right now I could at least get to the gate with a ticket in hand.

“Always remember that those with very important paths to fulfill will always be forced by life into the fear of the very things that their true paths consist of, in order to prevent the destiny from ever happening. Or perhaps, in order to strengthen the courage of the heart, because courage is to look into a direction, make a choice and to actually do that which you are afraid of, and what is destiny if it is not fulfilled by a heart full of courage and brawn?”

― C. JoyBell C.

***NOTE***

Keep in mind that not all fears are created equal. Sometimes you need more help than "mind over matter". PTSD, depression, serious phobias, anxiety, and severe panic attacks should never be tackled alone. Talk to your doctor about overwhelming and consuming fears. You don't have to go it alone, and you shouldn't.

Free E-book Box Set: When Twilight Meets Harry Potter? Let's See!

FREE TODAY!

I stumbled across this freebie yesterday and it definitely caught my interest.

Courtlight Series Set by Terah Edun, YA Fantasy, Free Ebooks, box set, magic, romance, coming of age, Terah Edun, Free, D.M. Kilgore, The Realm, Book Finds, Thursday Thrills, February Giveaway, Amazon Ebooks, The Realm of D.M. Kilgore, Writing, Am Writing, Books, Authors, Writers

The first three books of the Courtlight Series are free right now in this digital box set, so I figured, why not? I downloaded them and read the first three chapters of book 1 last night. I wanted to keep reading. To be perfectly honest, it captured me before I realized it. At first I wasn't sure it was going to draw me in, but somehow, almost magically, it managed to do so. Terah Edun is a best-selling author of YA fiction that I've somehow missed out on. Not anymore. I think I'll be reading many more of her books in the months (and years) to come!

That said, if you are a fan of fantasy-sci-fi-ish-coming of age stories set in a magical world... you should grab these while they're free!

I'm not far enough in to say, "Yes, it is like Twilight meets HP!" but it's certainly captured my attention. I want to see what will happen next!

Bringing The Heat- A Secret Look At A Day In The Hot Zone!

D.M. Kilgore, The Realm, Am Writing, FitBit, Fitness, College Life, Criminology, Balance Life Work and Family, Fit Writer, Ian Sommerhaulder Approves-Ha!, Just Write, Just Walk, Just Study, Just DO IT, Heat Map, Hot Zone, Productivity, Tipsy Tuesday, Writer Tips, A Day In The Life, A Writer's Day, 20k Steps! Bringing The Heat- A Secret Look At A Day In The Hot Zone by D.M. Kilgore Last week I told you about a fantastic productivity tool called Heat-Mapping.

I've been using this system for two weeks and I can't believe the difference it's made in my life.

Amazing!

I went from struggling to get in a thousand words and 2 thousand steps a day to hitting over 12k words last night and over 20k steps! And I even had time to watch a 2 hour and 45 minute long movie!

Now that I've found my hot zones, I'm accomplishing my daily goals with time left over for some fun and relaxation. Let's face it, we all need a little more fun and relaxation in our days!

My day is divided into six categories. Each has a specific time of day to be completed based on my "heat" level during those hours.

Here is what a typical weekday looks like using the heat map technique:

I wake up in the GREEN zone

  •  Wake up at 6:00 a.m. (yes, me the anti-morning person is getting up before the rooster crows).
  •  Dress in workout clothes, wash face, brush teeth, etc.
  •  Let the furkids out to potty. Open all blinds, turn off security lights, etc.
  •  Drink 8 oz. of water.
  •  30 minutes of yoga. (I find putting the furkids in the playroom is the only way to do yoga!)
  •  Shower and dress for "work". (No more going to the office in PJ's.)
  •  Eat breakfast (usually oatmeal and fruit).
  •  Fix a cup of chai tea, fill my Contigo with water, and head to the office.
  •  Take a seat at the desk and check my Planner. Mark off "morning routine & workout".

It is now 7 a.m. and time to start my first category "WORK". I'm in the YELLOW zone now.

  • 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. Boot up my laptop and desktop. Turn on my Relax Melodies app. and set it for "Isochronic Tones - 20-Concentration". This helps me get my mind to "focus". Work on jobs in order of pay-scale, importance, time available.

It's now 9 a.m. and I'm in the ORANGE zone. It's time to move on to my next category "BLOGS".

  • 9 a.m. - Wake my son up, get his breakfast going, and sit down with him to go over his daily assignments. I turn him lose on his school work, and sit down at the desk in my satellite office (the school room).
  • 9:30 a.m. - Log into Read Write Muse and begin my checklist and blog duties.
  • 10 a.m. - Log into The Realm and begin my checklist, blog duties, and writing posts.
  • 11 a.m - 11:30 a.m. It's SNACK TIME! I shoot for something that will keep me going (almonds) and refill my Contigo. I get my son a snack and make sure he's on track too.

At 11:30 a.m. it's time to focus on my COLLEGE assignments. I'm still in the ORANGE zone.

  • 11:30 a.m. - Log into my college blackboard, check the weekly module assignments, and begin with the overview, videos, and reading assignments. If I finish early, I go to the next assignment. If not, the rest of the week will be for written assignments, projects, and final essays. (I also cheat and include my afternoon workout by reading/studying while using my Stamina In-Motion.)

    Lunch & Homeschool check.

  • 1:30 - 2 p.m. I fix our lunch, we sit down together, and we go over any school work that needs my attention. If everything is completed and my son doesn't need any specific help, he's free to go play after lunch.

Now, I'm in the YELLOW zone again, and all I really want to do is take an afternoon siesta, but it's time to move on to what I call "N-PB-R".

I move back to my desk, bringing the Stamina-55 with me, so I can pedal away while I begin the next category: Networking, Platform Building, and Research.
  • 2 - 2:30 p.m. I research articles, blog posts, other websites, books, and anything else I can get my hands on that will help me learn more about networking, marketing, platform building, and using social media/my blog to help me reach my audience.

WHOO WHOO RED ZONE KICKED IN!

Something about learning more about the "business" of writing really spurs me to get my butt in gear and get some words on the page. Now, it's time to WRITE.
  • 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. is my WRITING time. I'm in the zone, there's no stopping my creative juices during this period.

I stop at 5:30 p.m. (even if I don't want to) clean up my office, mark off my daily goals, make notes to myself for the next day, and check my final category "MISC". If nothing needs immediate attention there, I turn off the lights, shutting the door behind me.

I give myself a pat on the back for completing a ten-hour workday before dinner!

This is where I check my FitBit stats and do a 2-5 mile walk. Once that's done, I'm done!

Now, I have the rest of the night with my family.

Prior to the heat-map method my "work" day was from whatever time I woke up to whatever time I went to bed, trying to work through GRAY zones, procrastinating away my day, being frustrated that I couldn't seem to stay on task, and more than anything wasting my RED hours piddling on Facebook or Pinterest.

This technique has been more than a time saver. It's been a LIFE SAVER.

If you'd like to find out more about how this method works, check out the following post:

Dear Bloody Diary, Monday Needs A Makeover!

Awww Kitty!

I've been trying to cancel Monday for a month.

I underestimated Monday's determination to mess up my week.

It's cold. It's spitting ice all over the place. The power lines are looking scary. The Internet keeps going out (which is probably not weather related since it happens daily here in hole-in-the-wall-ville). My website is down and tech-support isn't sure why.

Did I mention it's cold

My body is trying to convince my brain that a hot bath, a warm bed, and a few hours with Netflix never hurt anyone. My brain isn't putting up much of a fight at this point. After all, no Internet means I can't do 60% of my work today.

That other 40% though... I have no excuse to abandon. Especially now that I have a great schedule in place that's working flawlessly. More about that tomorrow.

Back to the weather and the Monday-ness that is Monday.

D.M. Kilgore, Dear Bloody Diary, Monday Needs A Makeover!, The Realm of D.M. Kilgore, Making Over Monday, Monday Motivation, Musings, It's What you LOOK for that matters, Can't Beat Monday? How to join Monday on YOUR terms, Am Writing, Blogging, Writer, Blue Monday, I Hate Monday, Monday Or Me?, Myths, Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down!
Dressing for work is starting to look a lot
like preparing for an arctic adventure.
I can't do much to change the fact that my husband spoke
the ritualistic snow curse last week. Yep. He did this.

It was 70 degrees and sunny out and he said,

"We sure have had a mild winter."

Cue the ice storms, snow, and freezy.

I assume since Monday refuses to be cancelled, the jokes on me.
Monday might have won this round, but the fight is far from over. As usual, I have a plan. If I can't beat Monday, I'll join Monday, but on my terms. My terms involve giving Monday a makeover. Monday needs a new look. One that says, "Hey girlfriend, come sit next to me and let's sip champagne, eat chocolate-covered strawberries, and talk about books". Now that, is my kind of Monday.

Step # 1: Clean Monday Up.
  • Wash that horrid blue eye shadow off! Eww. No more Blue Mondays.
  • Get rid of that "Hate Me I'm Monday" T-shirt. No more Hate Mondays.
  • De-louse that 'do! No wonder Monday is so lousy. No more Parasites.

Step # 2: Cheer Monday Up.
  • Send Monday flowers once a month... to yourself. Flowers on Monday Morn? Instant =)
  • Find a peppy "anthem" song and make it your wake-up alarm on Monday mornings.
  • Make it a "reward" day. Treat yourself each Monday and soon you're looking forward to them.

Step # 3: Start Monday Up.
  • Start your Monday with an uplifting quote or saying. A positive thought in the morning can change the momentum of your whole day.
  • Accept that it's just a day. All that "bad" stuff? Myth. Made up by an airline company long ago.
  • Adjust your 'tude. Is it Monday or is it Moody Me? Check yourself. Maybe Monday isn't the problem at all.

Hmm. Maybe Monday isn't out to get me. If I go to bed Sunday night thinking about how awful Monday is going to be, I'm setting it  up to be an instant disaster the minute the alarm goes off.
