How Do I Make Time For Fitness?

Easy! 

 

I squish it into my schedule
in fun and fabulous ways! 

I even sneak it into
our weekly Family Fun Night.


Fitness? Ain't nobody got time for that!

Actually, you do. Like writing, you won't magically "find" the time for it, but you can make the time for it.  

The secret: You have to want it

Confession: It's not easy to make the time for something you don't always know you "want". With an overbooked life it can be especially challenging. You have to make the time, but you also have to find the motivation to want to. Finding my motivation was the toughest part.

Here's how I handled it:


1. I got real with myself and my excuses.

 

  • Excuse #1: I'm too tired.

    Truth:
    I'm too busy expending my energies in all the wrong places.

    Solution:
    I took note of how I was spending my time and energy and killed anything that was sucking my life away without any reward or purpose. That hour I was on Pinterest pinning the best "fitness" quotes? Gone. The thirty minutes I wasted on Facebook whining about my lack of energy? A thing of the past. Bam- right there is an extra hour and a half for fitness!

  • Excuse #2:  I'd rather spend time with my family/friends.

    Truth:
    I can actually spend time with my family that doesn't require me to be in a vegetative state of perpetual couch potato. In fact, it benefits all of us if I require something more than drooling over a bowl of popcorn while we watch Netflix.

    Solution: Think outside the "dinner and a movie" night. We're getting into a rut of dinner and a movie which also means a rut of sitting on our butts. From now on we're going to include more "moving and shaking" into our family fun nights. I'll give you some fun ideas in step 3.


  • Excuse #3: It's too hot, too cold, too wet etc.

    Truth:
    PFFT! Since when does fitness have to happen outside in perfect weather?

    Solution:
    Inside activity options exist and keep you from getting "burn out" that comes with doing the same ol' workout every single day.


2. I got the right tools to kill my excuses.

 

  • Fitbit One: The Fitbit One is my best workout buddy. It motivates me to keep on keeping on until I hit my daily total of steps. As you can imagine getting this many steps when my day consists of a whole lot of sitting on my butt isn't easy.

    Which is why I love the following tools:

    • Stamina In Motion Elliptical Trainer: This bad boy sits under my desk while I write or do college assignments. I'm on my butt but I'm peddling like Richard Simmons is behind me on a glittery tricycle! When I'm done with my "sit on butt" work I simply move this to the living room and put it where I can see it. During television show/movie watching I use it as a balance-elliptical. I'm watching TV, but I'm no couch potato!

    • Leslie Sansone Walk At Home DVDs: These DVDs are an anti-social hermit's dream come true, but they'll work for anyone. There's a great variety of workouts to choose from and I prefer these 100% to a boring ol' treadmill. I love my outside nature walks but I still use these everyday because it means I can walk in the rain, snow, or at midnight if I want to-- from the climate controlled safety of my living room. Leslie is energetic and fun without being over the top or creepy!

      • You'll also need a great pair of athletic shoes designed for your foot and your favored workout. I highly recommend going to a shoe store that specializes in fitness footwear. Thrifty secret? If you find the "perfect" pair of shoes in a store, come home and check online for the same brand/style at a discounted price. I found my faves (Asics) at Foot Locker... for $165.00. Got them in a discontinued color at Amazon for $36.95. I'm fit but I'm cheap.

3. I got the right attitude about the "work" in the workout.

 

  • Where there's a will, there's a way.

  • I might not be willing to "work out" but I'm always willing to have fun!
     
  • If you put some play into the workout it's suddenly more fun than work.

  • There's no rule that says adults can't play and have fun.

  • Walk in place, hop on a stationary bike, or jump rope while you watch movies or catch up on your favorite television shows.

  • Play hide and seek with your kids, spouse, or friends. Too kiddie for the grown ups? Try Extreme Hide And Seek. Everyone hiding gets a grenade (water balloon), the Seeker gets a water gun. Get the idea? A Nerf Gun war is also fun.

  • Get outside and hike, skate, swim, play on the swing set, jump on the trampoline, ride a bike.

  • Raining? Too cold/hot? Play indoors. Games like hide and seek are still fun inside too! Try "bomb squad" - Set an egg timer for 7 minutes, hide it well, turn your friends/family lose to find it and shut it off before it 'blows'. (This works best with an egg timer that ticks loudly.)

  • Pop in a favorite movie and play "Every Time" - Every time someone casts a spell in Harry Potter do ten jumping jacks- see who is the fastest. Every time a commercial comes on during the Walking Dead run in place. You get the idea.

  • Dance like no one's watching. Yell out "Random Dancing" at the weirdest possible moments-- the rule is everyone (including you) has to dance for 30 seconds when you do. Even more fun? Give your kids the power to call for a random dance. They are so much better at spontaneity, you know?

Play outs? Now, I can get into that! I've started Tai Chi. I've always wanted to since I saw that TNG episode with Warf in his little white jammies. It's fun for me to pretend I am a cool ninja or Tai Chi master while I increase my balance and muscle tone. Fun ideas! We've played capture the flag games with all the neighborhood kids before. It's better in the dark.

These tips are awesome!! Great ways to stay in shape and have fun. I do a lot of home workout DVDs myself, now the library has great streaming options online so I switch it up using those. Also, there's a lot on Youtube too. I'm going to have to incorporate those movie ideas next time I babysit.

This is why I write while sitting on a yoga ball. It's just plain fun, and handy for an impromptu stretch/work-out!

Oh Tai Chi, LaDonna? Wow. I'm stuck on Chai Tea. ;) There's a story I loved when I was a kid about a pig and capture the flag. =D

Rebecca - youtube does have some good stuff. I do my yoga online with Yoga Star, but now and then I like to switch it up with some youtube videos of cardio and dance.

Stephanie- OH YES! LOVE MY YOGA BALL! Is it weird that it is more comfy than my desk chair?
