Dear Bloody Diary... Musing Monday

Musing Monday

Hmmm. Is it a rut? Or a routine?
Rut? Routine?
-Writer Cam-

 Rut Roh.

I was working on my "goal-a-day" list when I suddenly realized my routine might actually be a rut.

How does one tell the difference
between a rut and a routine?

A routine is a series of habits. Horace Mann said, "Habit is a cable; we weave a thread of it every day, and at last we cannot break it." Our habits are a potent ingredient in the recipe of life. Habits can either empower us or enslave us.

The empowering habits are the ones that have a purpose. They form a routine that keeps us moving towards our goals.

Ruts are routines that have gone bad. They might have started out good, but now they've grown stale, boring. A rut is a habit turned into a ball and chain. It's a roadblock to where you're going.

It's just as important to know how to break a bad routine as it is to build a good one.

In order to kill the rut and breathe new life into the routine, I've created some recipes.

Someone's In The Kitchen With D.M.
Mix it up! Stir it up! Goooo routine!

D-Lish Chunky Routine Casserole:

1  Cup    Desire
2  Cups  Decision
3  Cups  Dedication
4  Cups  Determination
5  Cups  Discipline

1> Desire a hearty dose of habits with purpose.
2> Decide which habits will help you mix up a routine with meaning.
3> Dedicate yourself to the time it will take for the habit to age into a routine.
4> Determine to stick to your new routine with only minimal wiggle room.
5> Discipline, discipline, discipline. You have to have it, even when you don't want it.

Mix well, bake for at least 66 days (for a habit to become a routine), cut into manageable chunks, and serve it up on a heart-shaped platter with a side of consistency.

Your routine casserole doesn't have an expiration date, but you should give it a whiff now and then for any signs that it's going bad. If it becomes stale, toss in some fresh ingredients where needed, and mix it up again.

If you are already in a rut, here's a cure-all recipe to get you back on track:

Rut Be Gone:

3 Days break
1 Gallon enthusiasm

Step away from the routine for three days, then pour in a gallon of enthusiasm.

What did you do during your break? Find a way to incorporate it into your routine. Like any recipe, we can get bored with the same ol' flavor. Our tastes change as we get older. You have to accommodate yourself sometimes and toss out an old ingredient in favor for something with a little more kick.

That's a spicy habit!

What about that Recipe For Disaster?

That one is easy. Only one ingredient:

If you find that in your casserole, grab a nice, shiny, sharp spoon and dig it out!
