The Realm of D.M. Kilgore

It's the second Tuesday of the month.

You know what that means?

IT'S TIME TO GET TIPSY!

Here's an awesome drink recipe and your monthly writing tip! Let's settle in with a cup of Apple-Cider Punch and talk about BETA READING.

To Beta? Or Not To Beta? That is the question!

Now, Let's Talk About Beta Reading:

You've finished your first draft!

You've proofread it, self-edited it, and revised it a bazillion times.

Whoo hoo! It's ready to publish!

Hold your horses young padawan!

What you talkin bout?

You're not ready yet.

First, you need beta readers. After that you'll need a professional proofreading and editing team. Then, when everyone has gone over it with a fine tooth comb, you'll need a second set of beta readers.

That take furever! I just publish now!

Uhm, no.

Dog not hero? I hates.
Having a second, third, fourth, and maybe even a fifth set of eyes look over your first (self-proofed/edited) draft is an essential part of the process.

Letting someone else read your draft and give you honest feedback is priceless. It allows you to step out of the writer's frame of mind and into the reader's. Another great way to switch mindset from writer to reader to beta read for others.

Trading drafts for beta reading is a great way to learn more about yourself as a writer, while brushing up on your critiquing and editing skills. You'll find your greatest strengths and weaknesses through the eyes of others. Beta readers can point out errors, bad habits (like using the same phrase over and over), and give you critical feedback on what they like most and least about your writing and your story.

What wrong my eyes?

In the process of dedicating so much time to our work, we develop tunnel vision.

No. No. No. This just won't do.

Having another writer, an avid bookworm, or someone whose judgment you trust read your work helps you see what you've done well and what needs more work.

It is also a terrific way to catch errors that you missed yourself.

I wrotes what?!

It's astonishing what the readers catch that the writers don't!

Fine had betas. Now I publish?

Not yet.

You'll need to go through all your beta readers notes and make the necessary and appropriate revisions.

Once you get it revised and feel confident it's the best it can be, then you send it to the pros to be professionally proofread and edited. You'll need to determine what services you want and find a qualified individual or team to get the job done.

A professional proofreading and editing team will do an in-depth job and uncover any and all errors (hopefully) and have your story ready to rock and roll.

 NOW I publish!

Almost.

It happens.
Have it beta read again. Seriously.

I know not every writer does this, but I highly recommend it. Send your professionally edited work to your most trusted beta readers. You might want to use the same favorites, and that's okay, but try to include some fresh eyes too. I choose the betas that did an excellent job to re-beta, and I also choose some trusted new betas to give it a brand new look over.
Even professional editors miss things sometimes.

 SOUND OFF!

It's really good. Later I'll share some warm drinks for the season, but this punch was too good not to share. Beta's DO save lives. ;) Agreed!
